Why Work with a Male Therapist?

Working with a male therapist is not the answer for all men. There may be times when working with a female therapist is ideal or there may be times when gender is irrelevant for the issue specific to you. It is important to note that women continue to do and have done an incredible job supporting men with their issues of mental health. Men Therapy Toronto was created for the subset of men who can feel intuitively they would benefit from working with a male therapist.

Often times there is something inherently scary about sitting down in front of another man and sharing parts of you that you have always felt ashamed of. Yet, there is also something liberating about that exact experience.

When Should I be Working with a Male Therapist?

There is no exact formula about when or what issue would be best served by choosing a man as your therapist. Here are some areas that could suggest that maybe working with a man would be helpful.

  • If you feel very strong resistance to working with a male therapist
  • If you struggle when around other men (i.e. feelings of insecurity or inadequacy)
  • If you struggle to build friendships or intimate relationships with other men
  • If you have issues or questions about your masculinity
  • If you have issues around your sexuality (i.e. confusion, sex addiction)
  • If you have issues with your relationship with your father

This is just a partial list of times when working with a male therapist may be helpful. IMPORTANT: A female therapist would be perfect to help you with all the above issues as well. Working with a male would be helpful only if you intuitively feel that is what you need.

Benefits of Men Working with a Male Therapist

The surprising experience for many men working with a male therapist is one of a sense of equality. Often men create an unreal perception of what it means to be a man and may wrongly assume that all other men have achieved this unreal perception. Men working with a male therapist will often learn that they are not alone in their feelings and struggles. They will also feel a certain strength that may have eluded them as they start to realize that they are and have always been the man they dreamed they’d be.
